Sri Lanka Holidays

Ancient temples, tea country, wildlife and stunning beaches — Sri Lanka in two unforgettable weeks.

From $1,099 per person

Sri Lanka is one of Asia's most rewarding travel destinations — a teardrop-shaped island of extraordinary variety, where ancient Buddhist temples, colonial hill stations, leopard-rich national parks and some of the Indian Ocean's finest beaches sit within a few hours of each other.

The Cultural Triangle

The Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura — contains the greatest concentration of ancient ruins in Asia outside of Cambodia. Sigiriya, a royal palace built atop a 200-metre volcanic rock in the 5th century, is one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological sites. We arrange early morning visits to avoid the heat and the crowds.

Tea Country — Nuwara Eliya & Ella

Sri Lanka's central highlands are a landscape of extraordinary beauty — mist-covered mountains terraced with tea estates, colonial bungalows and a cool climate that comes as a welcome relief after the heat of the coast. The train journey from Kandy to Ella, through the tea country, is widely considered one of the world's great rail journeys. We book the observation car in advance.

Wildlife & Safari

Yala National Park has the highest density of leopards of any park in the world. Minneriya offers the extraordinary spectacle of hundreds of wild elephants gathering around a reservoir in the dry season. Udawalawe is outstanding for elephant herds year-round. We arrange private safari vehicles with expert naturalists.

The South Coast Beaches

Sri Lanka's south coast — Mirissa, Tangalle, Unawatuna, Weligama — offers excellent beaches, a thriving surf scene and some of Asia's best whale-watching (blue and sperm whales are regularly sighted off Mirissa from November to April). Combine with a few days in Galle, the finest colonial town in Asia, and you have a near-perfect end to any Sri Lanka itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Two weeks is ideal for a circuit combining the Cultural Triangle, tea country, a national park and the south coast beaches. Ten days is achievable but rushed; three weeks allows for deeper exploration.

Sri Lanka has two distinct monsoon seasons affecting different coasts. The west and south coasts are best from November to April. The east coast is best from April to September. The Cultural Triangle and hill country are accessible year-round, though June to September is drier.

Sri Lanka is a very safe and welcoming destination for tourists. The country has fully recovered from the 2019 Easter bombings, and the tourism infrastructure is well-developed throughout the island.
