Best Time to Visit the Maldives

Month-by-month guide to Maldives weather, crowds and prices — from specialists who've been there.

The Maldives sits just north of the equator — which means it has a tropical climate year-round, with temperatures staying between 25°C and 31°C regardless of when you visit. But there is still a best time, and a worst time, to go — and knowing the difference can make a significant impact on your experience.

November to April — The Dry Season

This is the Maldives' peak season, and for good reason. The northeast monsoon brings dry, clear weather, calm seas and excellent visibility for diving and snorkelling. December and January are peak months — temperatures are perfect, skies are blue and the sea is flat. The trade-off is price: this is the most expensive time to visit, and the best resorts book out early.

May to October — The Wet Season

The southwest monsoon brings more frequent rainfall and slightly rougher seas, particularly on the western atolls. But this period is significantly misunderstood. Rain in the Maldives tends to come in short, intense bursts — not days of grey drizzle. Prices are lower, resorts are quieter and the sea remains warm throughout. Surfers prefer this season for the consistent Indian Ocean swells.

Month-by-Month Guide

January and February are the peak of the dry season — best weather, highest prices. March and April are still dry but slightly warmer. May and June transition into the wet season. July and August see the most significant rainfall. September and October are the wettest months but prices are at their lowest. November marks the return of clear weather and the beginning of the booking rush.

Our Recommendation

For most visitors, we recommend February, March or November as the optimal combination of weather, price and resort availability. If budget is the primary consideration, June or early July offer substantial savings with acceptable weather. Avoid August and September if you're hoping for reliable sunshine.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the wet season, expect brief but heavy rain showers — typically in the afternoon or evening. Morning sunshine is common even in the wettest months. The northern atolls are less affected by the southwest monsoon than the southern atolls.

Whale sharks are present year-round in the Maldives but are most frequently sighted around South Ari Atoll from December to March and in the North Malé Atoll during the transitional months.

August to October offer the lowest prices — typically 30–50% below peak season rates at most resorts. Availability is also significantly better.
