Is Business Class Worth It?

An honest assessment from travel specialists — when it makes sense, and when it doesn't.

Business class is one of the most frequently asked-about topics in travel. The question is always the same: is it worth it? The honest answer is: it depends on the route, the airline, your budget, and what you're travelling for. Here's our genuine assessment.

When Business Class Is Absolutely Worth It

On long-haul overnight flights of 8+ hours, business class is genuinely transformative. The difference between arriving in Singapore after 13 hours in economy versus business class is the difference between being exhausted for your first day and hitting the ground running. If you're travelling for a significant occasion — honeymoon, major anniversary, once-in-a-lifetime trip — and you can afford it without stretching beyond what's comfortable, do it.

When It's Harder to Justify

On flights under 5 hours, even business class on the best airlines is essentially a wider seat with better food. For short-haul European flights, the premium rarely justifies the cost differential. If the extra cost would meaningfully reduce your holiday budget — better accommodation, more experiences, a longer trip — that trade-off often produces more total satisfaction than an upgrade.

Best Business Class Airlines

We book a lot of business class. Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific consistently deliver the finest long-haul business class experiences at competitive prices. ANA and Japan Airlines are outstanding but harder to access at value prices. Lufthansa and Swiss are excellent for transatlantic. On routes where it's available, we often recommend Qatar Qsuites as the benchmark for value in premium cabin travel.

How to Get the Best Business Class Prices

Booking early (9–12 months out) or very late (within 2 weeks of departure) often produces the best fares. Certain departure days — typically Tuesday and Wednesday — are consistently cheaper. Positioning flights (flying to a hub with a stronger business class offering) can also reduce cost significantly. We monitor fares and advise when the right moment to book has arrived.

Frequently Asked Questions

Business class typically costs 3–6x the price of economy on the same flight. On some routes and airlines the premium is as low as 2x; on others it can be 8x or more. We always quote both options and let you decide.

First class represents a meaningful step above business class — larger seats (often true beds in private suites), more personalised service, superior food and wine, and faster ground processes. On some airlines the gap is significant; on others it's modest. We advise on whether first class is genuinely worth the premium on your specific route.

We can advise on the general principles of using frequent flyer points for upgrades, but we are not a points management service. For complex points optimisation strategies, specialist services exist that focus entirely on this.
